The European Union supports research and innovation through the most ambitious programme in its history, Horizon 2020. Having nearly EUR 80 billion in grants available over 7 years, from 2014 to 2020, it finances projects emanating from a number of activity sectors and which bring answers, on at least a European scale, to great economic, social and environmental challenges of our time.
Horizon 2020
Horizon 2020 is structured around three priority areas of intervention: scientific excellence, industrial primacy and societal challenges. Throughout the duration of the programme, these three pillars will support calls for projects in different sectors.
Instrument for SMEs
Approximately 20% of the Horizon 2020 budget will be allocated to industrial primacy and societal challenges, of which nearly EUR 8 billion is intended for SMEs. The Instrument for SMEs measure now offers the possibility that a project be carried by only one SME. The objective is to incite more strategic project development and to contribute to a surge in international leaders.
Separated in Phase 1 (concept and feasibility evaluation) and Phase 2 (R&D, first marketing application) based on the project’s maturity, the Instrument for SMEs allocates a grant between EUR 50 000 and EUR 2.5 million. Each phase is independent; there is no need to have a file for Phase 1 in order to have access to Phase 2.
Excellence and competition
The path is often complex, like a competition formula with a moderate rate of success. At the same time, applying for grants allows access to larger ambitions, in a bigger market and with more successful innovation. This type of risk approaches audacity, one of the founding values of FRS.
